 I hope this doesn't seem too barbaric, but what people do around here
is mount the gunnplexer on a plate, get 3 long threaded screws from the hardware
store, and mount the gunnplexer at the focus. Adjust the slong threaded rods for
focus.

Hmm, Robert, I disagree. You mean *commercially* available transverters?

E.g. I'm using a transverter that when you look at the scheme make your
eyes drop. 4 transistors. OK, of course, when you want to have a bit
more output than you'll have to make/buy an amplifier.

 Several years ago, we had a Swan 250 250 watt 6m rig.  One day
when 6 was open, we were chasing around the band and worked every
station that a guy in Oregon was working, with about the same signal
reports.  We worked him, too, and he sounded quite acceptable.
 He was using 250mW on a home-brewed portable into a dipole.
 That's when we started looking into QRP....
 Seriously, when 6 is open 10 watts will do *very* well, and
when it's closed 10kw won't make a dent in things.  Where more power
will help is when it's starting to collaps, then *maybe* you can get
in a final 73, but 6 tends to close rather fast so it's iffy even
then.

The main reason for this is the new scanner laws going into effect in the
US.  If a receiver can scan more than 4 *programmed* frequencies in one
second, then it falls under the scanner laws and restrictions.  Even though
HT's aren't normally bought for their scanning capabilities, manufacturers
aren't taking any chances of damaging thier overseas transciever markets.  My
Yeasu 2200 mobile will slowly scan programmed freqs, but blazes through the
band on a start-stop frequency limit scan.

As far as mods for this type go, I'm sure it's possible on a few models, but
have no particular examples... :-(

Subject: Help with HW101

Greetings!  My HW-101 is giving me some troubles and I was hoping
there might be a few heathkit gurus on the net.  It has the following
symptoms.

1) Power supply has two settings: 250V and 300V.  Receiver works with
either.  Mic will key the transmitter with either.  CW key will not key
the transmitter in 250V

2) When AF gain is over half up (PS at 300V), the CW key will not key the
transmitter.  Turning AF gain below 50% will allow the key to function.
(You can hear the tones softly with the AF up, but the transmitter does
not actually switch on...the tones are just coming through the receiver)
The mike will key the transmitter regardless of af position.

3) CW key gives full power (actually my meter show more than supposed full
power shooting up the antenna).  Mic gives about 1/4 power (20-25W).

4) Transmitted power steadily declines with use (though this may be due
to over-heating from unrstricted air flow...)

Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Subject: Icom u-2at battery

 I have an Icom u-2at that is at least 5 years old.
The battery used for the display circuit is soldered
onto the circuit board, and is quickly nearing the
end of its life.  Short of sending the radio back to
the factory to be "lost" for weeks, is there anyone
who may be familar with changing it?  I am very comfortable
with opening the unit.  Another question might be, should
the battery die outright, will the radio continue to work?

I figure sometime next year or so I will be moving to the UK
and I thought that picking up a ham-radio licence would be an
intersting way to keep in contact with some of my friends in
Canada.  I am not aware of the difference in the "rules" of
amateur ham radio operation in the UK and was hoping someone
could fill me in.
Particularly I'd like to know if I got my licence in Canada
would it be void in the UK?  What frequencies do they use
over there?  For example, if I bought a dual band radio here
would it work over there or would I have to purchase one in
the UK?

Any other info would be greatly appreciated...

What about the Wind Profilers?  These are used to characterize highl
level winds.  They are in this band, use high power, but they are almost
excusively directed vertically.

meter radio telescope in Puerto Rico.  I mostly use receivers tuned to
a center frequency of 430 MHz, with a bandwidth of 10 MHz.  RFI is
occasionally bad, but this past month it has been positively
*horrendous*, and has destroyed 90% + of my observations.  I'm at wit's
end, and would so very much appreciate any help...

This RFI is radar.  I've thought about AWACS (it started in a bad way
around the time the Haitian embargo also started).  However, as I learn
more about it, it seems clear that *by far* the worse times are between
about 3 and 9 pm local time (one hour ahead of EST), which doesn't seem
consistent with the idea of AWACS.  Naval radar also seems improbable:
the Naval Station on the island is usually cooperative, and they claim
not to know what this is.  If it were a passing ship not under their
control, it probably wouldn't have stayed in range for a month now...
I've been told that a PAVE PAWS radar in Georgia that looks southward
operates at 420-450 MHz, but they've been on since 1987.  Since they
bounce signals off the ionosphere, it might in principle be plausible
that they would test something new at a particular time of day... but
the signals are *so* strong...  The problem about estimating the
strength of the signals is that we have these awkward line feeds (it's
a spherical reflector) -- over 100 feet long! -- and I can't calculate
gains for direct illumination of the feeds, which almost certainly
is what's happening (they sit ~ 1000 feet above sea level with unimpeded
view of the ocean in most directions).

I guess my specific question is whether anyone has any clues as to what
might be causing abnormaly high levels of radar RFI at 430 MHz (mostly,
but not limited to, during the times of ~ 3-9pm) in or near Puerto
Rico.

Any help would be immensely appreciated!

Because it could be confused with a usage of the form KD6TTL/ZL1.  The US
"owns" prefixes AG, AE, and AA, so KD6TTL/AG wouldn't appear to be from
another country, but we don't own AT (which is not assigned, according to
my Callbook).
